The M109A6 Paladin is an American-made 155 mm self-propelled howitzer. It represents a major upgrade to the M109 family, designed to provide fast, highly accurate, and heavy indirect fire support to armored and mechanized infantry units.
Features
- “Shoot-and-Scoot” Capability: Equipped with an Inertial Navigation System (INS) combined with GPS and an Automatic Fire Control System (AFCS).
- It does not need to stop at a pre-surveyed battery position to lay its gun. The Paladin can receive target coordinates while moving, come to a halt, automatically orient its barrel, fire, and move out in under 60 seconds. This dramatically reduces vulnerability to enemy counter-battery fire.
- Secure Digital Communications: Features integrated digital tactical radio systems for real-time target data transmission between forward observers, fire direction centers, and the vehicle.
- Armored Artillery Backbone: Served as the primary heavy field artillery piece for the U.S. Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCT) starting in the 1990s.
- Combat Deployments: Saw extensive action in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), and various international deployments. It has also been supplied to allied nations (including Ukraine).
- Modernization: While still active globally, the U.S. military has been transitioning to the M109A7, which upgrades the chassis and powertrain with components derived from the Bradley Fighting Vehicle to improve mobility, electrical capacity, and maintainability.
