The tractor was developed at the Polish-Czechoslovak Tractor Research and Development Centre in Brno, then produced at the ZM Ursus plant in Poland between 1974 and 2009. A total of 4,857 units were produced. Many of them are still working on Polish farms and, in smaller numbers, in many other countries.
